Subject:1st post/Richard Scarry presents!
Time:12:54 pm
I just found this community and am so excited!! I love sewing, especially stuffed animals/things for kiddos...I'm starting to get interested in quilting but haven't got a lot of time (full time student, part time job, soon to be mom...) at any rate, here are my latest projects!

Made for a little one celebrating his 1st birthday today: a Huckle Cat hat, made from a felted angora sweater and a Lowly Worm stuffed animal. Lowly is about 3ft tall and is all felt, all hand-sewn. The hat didn't end up looking as much like Huckle as I had imagined it would, but I am really excited about how Lowly turned out!

Subject:Wedding Menu
Time:11:36 am
I met with my aunt yesterday to work on wedding stuff. We've set the Menu and I'm excited about it.

Pork Tenderloin
Brisket
Shrimp Cocktail
Ranch Potatoes
Veggie Tray
Fruit Tray (this is actually a four tier thing that is AMAZING looking)
Cream Cheese Balls

This is all going to be done by my aunt and i'm so happy. She's an awesome cook and I know everything will turn out awesome.

We also did some shopping and picked up my garter, guestbook and pen, cake serving set, and toasting glasses for the head table. I can't post pictures right now because I'm in Arkansas and forgot my camera cord. I'll post some once i get home.
I think we're going over to her friends house today to look at some vases. Her daughter just got married and she has a ton of vases and said we could use them. I'm hoping they work out (and am going to do just about anything i can to make it work) because this would save me a lot of money not having to buy them.

My cousin just told me he never got his save the date and i realized I sent it to the wrong address which makes me nervous that i did that to someone else! hopefully not but i guess i'll never really know.

Anyways, i just wanted to share since i'm so excited!

happy planning!

Subject:Christmas Dinner
Time:11:56 pm
You know it's the holiday season when every other post here has something to do with Turkey Day or Christmas. Haha. Anyway, I'm hosting my first Christmas this year, and I'm really excited about it. My mother in law is so...well, she seems to think that if she eats anyone else's cooking but hers, she's going to spontaneously combust or something. I don't kno what her issue is, but I digress. I've got a tentative menu worked out in my head, and I'd like y'all's input.

Mmm, Christmas dinner, anyone? )</lj-cut

Subject:Birthday party tomorrow, need to make a cake
Time:08:21 pm
It's my friend's birthday party tomorrow (21st) and I said I'd make a cake. It's also bill paying time so I can't fork out the money to buy everything from scratch. Plus I bought him 2 liters of rum.
So, members of cooking, I need the best from the box recipes you have. Something that nobody will ever think I threw together tomorrow morning.

Thank you!

Hi all, this is my first post here obviously. Just call me Niemand. I've been sewing for four years now, and just recently started sculpting. But today, I will start you off with a doll I just finished this morning.

Subject:Amigurumi base help?
Time:09:11 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] creative
Hi...

I have started to make some little Amigurumi and since I don't have much money this year for gifts I thought I would make Amigurumi for my nephew...
now I have looked around and I haven't found something to help me much on my project... you see I am looking for a base pattern really beauce I want to make Astro as an Amigurumi I know someone did an Etsy for Astro the original version but my nephew only know the blue jacket version.

I'm pretty sure I can figure out the pointy parts by myself... but I would need a good base body... Any free patterns I could base this off?

Thank you for your help, I personally would like the old version of Astro but kids nowdays...if it's not close it's no cigar...

Subject:Show me your... eco-friendly wedding pictures!
Time:01:17 am
I just went through all the entries in the "eco-friendly" tag and was amazed at all the great information and resources that are out there for having a "green" wedding. I bookmarked many websites and got a bunch of great ideas, but I didn't see many pictures of people's own green wedding elements.

So, if you've had a green wedding yourself, or simply had a few elements that were environmentally friendly- and you have pictures- I'd love to see them!

Edit: I also just had an idea I thought I'd ask you girls about- has anyone here grown their own bouquet flowers? I was thinking about planting a big patch of flowers at my parents house this spring and then using them for the bouquets (I'll only need mine and two small ones), corsages and boutonnieres. Is this impractical? I could always supplement them with farmers market flowers, but I thought this might be a neat thing to do.

Subject:milk fat in baking choclate question
Time:08:24 pm
Just bought a bag of these: http://www.ghirardelli.com/products/chips_bittersweet.aspx
The soy part dosen't bug me and I've never before had a problem with dark choclate(the darker the better I say). It's the milk fat that has me going "what"?

However I've recently cut out all dairy from my diet per a worsening dairy allergy, so perhaps I may not be able to tolerate what I once did. Anyone have any advice, my usual course of action since going gf/df free is to try any new food only on the weekends(in case I get sick), that way giving me time to recoupe.

I'd planed to use the choclate to make peppermint fudge(df free of course). Hopefully it'll work or I'll have to find a different kind of choclate.

Subject:Chocolate Pudding!
Time:11:17 am

Growing up, chocolate pudding was a staple in my home and one of my favorite comfort foods. Making pudding from a box, stirring it slowly over the stove is one of my earliest memories of food.

Now a bit older and wiser, I know that the real thing is so much better! You can’t beat the smooth, velvety texture and rich creamy flavor. You’ll likely have many of these ingredients on hand. Why settle for preservatives when you can easily make the real thing? I like it served warm in a bowl with a nice dollop of freshly whipped cream on top. It’s a simple, year-round dessert.

Chocolate Pudding

Adapted from Joy of Baking

Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup high quality cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream or half n half
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons high quality vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, room temperature (cut into small pieces)

In a large stainless steel bowl whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, cocoa powder, and salt. Then whisk in 1/2 cup of the milk until you have a thick paste. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, whisking to blend into the cocoa paste mixture. Set aside while you heat the milk and cream. Have a fine medium-sized strainer and bowl ready near the stove as you will need to strain the pudding after it is cooked.

Pour in the remaining 2 cups of milk with the cream into a medium-sized heavy saucepan . Bring this mixture just to a boil and then remove from heat. (The milk will foam up to the top of pan when done, so watch carefully.) Gradually pour the milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly, until the mixture is smooth. Transfer the pudding mixture to a clean large, heavy bottomed saucepan and place over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens to the consistency of mayonnaise. Remove from heat and pour through the strainer to remove any lumps that may have formed during cooking.

Add the finely chopped chocolate, vanilla extract, and butter, stirring gently with a rubber spatula until the mixture is smooth. Pour into 6 to 8 bowls. Can serve warm or if chilling, press plastic wrap onto the surface of the warm puddings to prevent a skin from forming.

Subject:So wrong but oh so good!
Time:07:57 pm
We had a friend visit us a couple of days ago, and had an impromptu chocolate tasting session - we bought a ridiculous amount of different flavoured chocolate in Germany a while ago, and it was a good time to share it.

Some flavours were good, some less so. But the one that truly stuck out was the Zaabar sage flavoured chocolate. Although it lacked a little something....and then we looked at the hard goat cheese on the table, and at each other, and at the chocolate....

The combination of dark chocolate, sage and goat's cheese is phenomenal. Aside from making a pretty unusual cheese course, I now want to combine these flavours in a dish, but I'm not sure the world is ready for it...and I'm not really sure what could be created! Any suggestions?

Subject:The Ultimate Thanksgiving
Time:07:59 pm
Mmmmkay, so, I've seen a few Thanksgiving posts in the last week or so, but I don't know that I've seen this particular question.

What is your BEST classic Thanksgiving recipe? You know the classics: stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. How do you prepare it?

In other words, share your ULTIMATE Thanksgiving menu, with recipes, please!

(Oh, and, you know, help a girl out here - I'm hosting Thanksgiving for the first time ever, and my family has never really had much of my cooking, other than a side dish here and there, so I'd really love to totally blow them away.)

No mofo here, just a massive brain fart.

I knew it was time to go home when I asked a fellow ref librarian how often the Investor's Business Daily came out.

She pointed to "Daily" and said "Does this help you?"

Duh.

I've been giggling ever since. I can't wait to tell that one on Monday.

Several months ago I asked for recommendations for yarn stores in Sydney. A couple people recommended http://www.morrisandsons.com.au/. They're great! And they were having a sale when we were there! Also, someone recommended Featherdale Wildlife Park. It was awesome! Thanks so much for the suggestions!

Tried to eat.

That was unwise on my part.

I already want to go to bed, but if I do I'll be awake again at midnight and unable to sleep.

I kind of wanted to do laundry today. If I'm feeling better I might do it tomorrow. A place in town has wifi, and I hear nothing but good things about it, I could do it there. Also really need to get my car inspected and oil changed.

This is all assuming I feel better. If not this all waits until Monday.

Fever is down at least. For now.

I wish I had Turn Coat to read. Feeling antsy for more Dresden.

I think I talked to my mom today. I think she called and woke me up from my nap and we talked a bit. I vaguely remember... I don't know. Hope it wasn't important. :P

Subject:Here's a question
Time:09:18 pm
Does anyone know how long SCSU takes to send out their final admission letters to the Graduate School? At this point it's pretty much a formality (I think, I mean, they've recommended me for admission and given me an SCSU email and all), but I need to sort out my financial aid and register for classes.

Thanks :)
